Players may be also assessed personal extended penalties or game expulsions for misconduct in addition to the penalty or penalties their team must serve. Minor penalties last for two minutes (major penalties last for five minutes), and a double minor penalty is two consecutive penalties of two minutes duration.
The elimination of body checking from international women’s hockey did not occur until after the 1990 Women’s World Championship. In 1983, Rhonda Leeman Taylor from Canada led the ban on body contact in all national women’s tournaments in Canada. Full-face protective masks are mandatory for players participating in women’s competitions. The 1989 IIHF European Women Championships (held in West Germany), was the first event sanctioned by the IIHF and marked the inaugural European Championship in women’s hockey, taking place before the Women’s World Championship sanctioned by the IIHF.
